Festival JOAT 2022

August 31st to September 6th 2022

It is with GREAT pleasure that we officially announce that the JOAT Festival will be back this year for a brand new edition in the Quartier des Spectacles, from August 31st to September 6th 2022, in co-production with Danse Danse

The entire team at Jack Of All Trades and Danse Danse has been working hard over the past year to bring you a new and revamped festival for you to enjoy even more!

Here’s the full program :

JOAT Battles

This year, JOAT will host no less than three battles in three different dance styles: popping (JOAT’s specialty and the origin of the festival), hip-hop and break. The battles are one of the emblematic elements of the JOAT festival.

JOAT Master Classes

JOAT wishes to offer a platform for dancers who wish to deepen their knowledge. There will be 8 master classes given by high caliber professional dancers in hip-hop, break and popping. The master classes are open to all and will be given by our JOAT BATTLE masters. Come and perfect your technique and discover the different approaches that will be taught to you.

JOAT Art - HYBRID (X) by A.MXSE

JOAT Art highlights cultural artists who have an artistic practice in visual arts. JOAT Art allows you to see the creative process behind the works of an artist chosen for the edition.

The collective art exhibition HYBRID(X) introduces the public to the culture and universe of street dance through various media and art forms.

As part of JOAT Festival, HYBRID(X) presents the works of five renowned multidisciplinary artists from the street dance community. The artworks and installations create an immersive experience ranging from photography to multimedia, audio-visual and digital works.

JOAT BlockParty

JOAT BlockParty You are invited to a celebration on Saturday, September 3rd at 2pm, outside on the Esplanade of Place des Arts. There will be music, festivities, dancing, DJ, food and MC. The block party is open to all and is an opportunity to get together, all generations, in a festive atmosphere.

C'est quoi les DAWs

C’est quoi les DAWs is a battle between qualified Hip Hop music producers who will play their best sounds created especially for the event. A battle in collaboration with Loop Sessions, JOAT concepts will be imposed to the producers before the event and they will have to produce new music according to different creative parameters. During the evening, the beatmakers will present their newly created musical works to a specialized jury who will choose the best among them.

JOAT Concert - Fredy V & The Foundation

To continue the day with music, the JOAT festival will be offering an electrifying R&B and Funk concert with a legendary Montreal band, Fredy V & The Foundation. A unique opportunity to get together and discover this hot band.

The Foundation is a group of talented musicians known for playing with some of Montreal’s best R&B, hip hop, funk, gospel and jazz bands. Starting out as a backing band for singer Fredy V’s shows, the collective decided to join forces in the studio to form Fredy V & The Foundation. After gaining collective experience producing and performing for CBC/Radio-Canada and collaborating with artists such as Malika Tirolien, Zach Zoya, Kallitechnis and Shay Lia, among others, the group took advantage of its momentum and began composing together for the first time.

Le Spot Session

JOAT wishes to offer a place of gathering, of exchange, open to all, on Thursday September 1st, Friday September 2nd and Sunday, September 4th, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The JOAT SESSION, hosted by 100lux, invites all dancers to a free practice, directly on the Esplanade of Place des Arts. Come and exchange as you wish!

JOAT Prelims

Pre-selection of dancers wishing to participate in the JOAT Battle final. All dancers are invited to come and improvise for a short time in front of the JOAT masters and the public. Sixteen of the best dancers will be chosen for the big night at Club Soda. Come and see the dancers do their first demo in front of our masters on the Esplanade of Place des Arts!

JOAT KidzBattle

The JOAT festival is opening its activities to all generations. For the first time, the festival will offer a children’s battle, the JOAT KidzBattle, an all styles dance battle for ages 18 and under, presented by the Urban-Element Zone. The public is invited to come and see the next generation of dancers perform without restraint and with great ingenuity.

Initiation Workshops

Have you always wanted to try street dancing? Don’t know where to start? JOAT will offer 1.5 hour workshops that will allow you to discover different styles of street dance. Three different styles will be offered during this hour and a half class. These workshops are presented by Urban-Element Zone. Those classes are open to all, all generations, no prerequisites. JOAT wishes to offer a friendly and non-judgmental space. Fun will be the order of the day!
